Locking Down Your Email Systems

We need to lock down our email inbox so that no one hijack our account, and so get access to every other system that we set up using that same email account.

Because changing your email’s password is a bit of a pain, there’s probably a good chance you haven’t done it in a while. If you’ve re-used your email password elsewhere over the years, then you may well be at risk. So now would be a good time to upgrade your email password to a strong and unique password.

Most traditional email systems (POP3 & IMAP) also include a web interface. The web interface is the best place to change your email password. You will typically login into the web interface with your email address and email password combo. Once logged in, you should be able to go to the “ACCOUNT SETTINGS” screen and change your password. Note, that if you are using a dedicated email client (i.e. you access email using a software application rather than a browser e.g. Outlook) then you will also need to update that application with your new email password in order for you to continue to receive emails following a password change. The same is also true if you are receiving email on your phone with a dedicated email app (e.g. gmail).
